PACE 2024 (Pastors Continuing Education) Program
Sat Sep 14 2024

The Annual PACE 2024 Program was held from 11–14 September 2024 at SAHODAYA, the Karnataka Theological College Program Centre. PACE 2024 was designed to address two vital areas of pastoral life—Disability inclusion in the Church and Emotional well-being in ministry.

Engage Disability Workshop (11–12 September)

The first two days featured a workshop on Engage Disability facilitated by the Engage Disability India team: Ms. Jessica Richard (National Coordinator and Director of Engage Disability India) and Ms. Jubin Varghese (Project Manager, Emmanuel Hospital Association). Participants were introduced to key disability-related terminology, given an overview of various types of disabilities, and equipped with practical tips for identification. They also explored the four major barriers faced by persons with disabilities in the Church: attitudinal, physical, theological, and technological. An interactive session on disability etiquette guided participants in understanding appropriate behaviour when interacting with people with diverse disabilities. A participatory group Bible study led by Rev. Sandeep Theophil encouraged participants to re-read and interpret challenging biblical texts from a disability perspective, envisioning the full and just participation of persons with disabilities in the life of the Church.

Ministry and Emotional Well-being (13–14 September)

The latter two days of the program were led by Rev. Dr. Jacob Cherian, a trained counsellor, who guided participants through an in-depth exploration of emotional health and resilience in ministry. The sessions covered a range of pressing topics, including understanding stress and burnout in ministry, developing emotional intelligence and mental health awareness, navigating marriage and family dynamics in a ministry context, and parenting under pressure. Practical insights were also offered on setting boundaries and managing expectations, supporting others through grief, loss, and crisis while caring for one’s own well-being, and cultivating healthy communication for conflict resolution. These themes were brought to life through interactive discussions, role-playing, case studies, and practical exercises, ensuring that participants were not passive listeners but active contributors. The engaging format encouraged deep reflection and honest dialogue about the realities of pastoral life.

The program brought together 60 participants from various denominations, including the Karnataka Northern, Southern, and Central dioceses of the CSI churches, the Methodist Church, the United Basel Mission Church, and several independent churches. Faculty and students of Karnataka Theological College also participated actively, contributing to a rich and collaborative learning environment.
